Program Information

Eligibility

Three scholars are appointed each year. Eligible faculty members should have a primary appointment in Pediatrics on the clinician educator or clinical practice track and be early in their career development.

Support

Faculty members will be appointed as Dodd scholars for up to two (2) renewable one (1) year terms. They will receive financial support of $10,000 per year as a Dodd program participant to foster career development and scholarly activity (funds may be used to support research or program costs or to support participation in courses or meetings which will enhance the scholar's career development). In addition, they will identify and work with a mentor for career development and a mentor for project development.

Mentors

Appropriate mentors are faculty who have a history of individual success and a track record of successful mentoring. Scholars will select mentors at the time of application. Scholars who complete the program will be asked to serve as mentors-in-training for future scholars by serving on mentoring committees for scholars.

Program Milestones

Year One

  • Develop individualized career development plan
  • Meet with mentor, division director and additional mentors
  • Meet with mentor(s) at least monthly
  • Obtain IRB approval for project (as needed)
  • Develop project protocol/plan
  • Implement project
  • Participate in monthly scholar activities (skills workshops, works in progress, symposia)
  • Attend at least one national meeting where you meet with at least two senior faculty from other institutions to discuss their project or career interests
  • Attend an education or career development workshop and write a one-page review

Year Two

  • Update individualized career development plan
  • Meet with mentor, division director and additional mentors
  • Meet with mentor(s) at least monthly
  • Complete project
  • Participate in monthly scholar activities (skills workshops, works in progress, symposia)
  • Attend at least one national meeting where you meet with at least two senior faculty from other institutions to discuss their project or career interests
  • Attend an education or career development workshop and write a one-page review
  • Schedule and deliver an invited talk at another institution
  • Submit an abstract for a national meeting
  • Join at least one national committee in your specialty area
  • Develop a three- to five-year plan for promotion

Renewal of the scholar's appointment is based on completion of expected milestones and participation in scholar program activities.

Leadership

The Faculty Scholars Program is coordinated by the Office of Faculty Development. The Advisory Committee provides program oversight and evaluation and participates in scholar selection.
