Dr. Soslow is a pediatric cardiologist with advanced training and expertise in pediatric cardiac imaging. He specializes in echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR). He has a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) and focuses his research program on the assessment of serum and imaging biomarkers in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) cardiomyopathy and after heart transplant. He has been the principal investigator for multiple studies, including an American Heart Association Clinical Research Program grant, a K23 and an R56 funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and a grant from the Enduring Hearts Foundation. He is currently the PI of a multi-site R01 from the Food and Drug Administration evaluating the longitudinal progression of DMD cardiomyopathy and two multi-site R01s from the NIH/NHLBI evaluating non-invasive detection of rejection in heart transplant recipients and identifying clinical outcome measures for DMD cardiomyopathy. He is the Director of Clinical Research for the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the Co-Director of the DMD Multispecialty Clinic and the Gene Therapy Clinic. He also serves as the Chair of the Steering Committee for the Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease Section of SCMR.

Dr. Andrew Sokolow is a pediatric pulmonologist with clinical and research interests focused on cystic fibrosis (CF) with particular interest in Staph Aureus, which has led to collaborative efforts with his colleagues in the department of pediatric infectious disease. This collaboration has led to work in vaccine research with the Vanderbilt Vaccine Research Program (VVRP) through the NIAID Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Unit (VTEU). In addition to his work in CF and infectious disease, Dr. Sokolow has also contributed to research surrounding quality improvement and therapeutic updates in Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Hematology/Oncology

Dr. Smith's clinical focus is hematologic malignancies, with a special interest in Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphomas, and PTLD. She is a member of the Children's Oncology Group and a panel member for the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Pediatric Hodgkin's Guidelines Panel.

She is a leader in quality improvement (QI) and patient safety with multiple ongoing projects including tumor lysis supportive care, opioid prescribing, and medication reconciliation. She leads the divisional Morbidity, Mortality, and Improvement conferences and works with both the hospital and Department of Pediatrics on safety and quality improvement initiatives. Dr. Smith participates in education about QI with the Faculty Quality Academy and through the ASPHO Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Special Interest Group, which she co-founded with other national colleagues.

Dr. Smith loves working with our brilliant trainees. She directs our resident PHO rotation and is a core faculty member for the pediatric residency program. She is a clinical mentor for our PHO fellows.

Dr. Shelton is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She completed her PhD in molecular and developmental biology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (2008). She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Vanderbilt in 2013 before joining the Division of Neonatology as a junior faculty member. Dr. Shelton's research interests center on understanding the molecular, genetic, and biomechanical regulation of an essential fetal blood vessel, the ductus arteriosus (DA). The Shelton laboratory focuses on identifying factors that set the DA apart from other vessels in the body in the hopes of developing novel DA-specific therapeutics. Furthermore, Dr. Shelton is interested in identifying adverse ductus-related side effects of pharmacological agents that are commonly administered to pregnant mothers or neonatal infants. For these studies, her lab uses a combination of primary cell culture models, high throughput drug screens, cannulated vessel myography assays, and whole animal models to identify factors that constrict or relax the DA.
