The Collective

The Collective is a collaborative, safe space to strengthen career development and enhance networking among faculty, fellows, and residents who self-identify as underrepresented in medicine (URiM) in the Department of Pediatrics.

We recognize the importance of increasing the number and the retention of physicians from underrepresented groups; yet, progress has been slow over the past decade. Black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx, American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander individuals comprise nearly 40% of the U.S. population. However, they currently represent only 11% of active physicians and 9% of medical school faculty, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) in 2019. By fostering a supportive community of residents, fellows, faculty, and mentors who share similar experiences, we aim to empower URiM individuals. Peer support from those with shared perspectives is essential for URiM individuals to thrive both personally and professionally, and we are committed to creating an environment where this can flourish.
