Child Neurology Residency Program

Djamila was born in Afghanistan and lived in Pakistan for a couple of years before moving to the Netherlands with her family at the age of 10 as refugees. Her interest in clinical research began during an international research elective as medical student here at Vanderbilt, where she also obtained her MPH. Her research was primarily focused on the complications of sickle cell disease, including the neurological sequelae of sickle cell disease. During this time, she discovered her passion for child neurology.

Djamila is married to Matin who she met in Nashville, and they have a 3-year-old son together (Noah). They are also proud cat and dog parents of Keanu and Harley. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, cooking, eating, hiking, and traveling.

Kyle is a native of the great state of Indiana but still has mixed feelings about being identified by the term “hoosier” (Yes, Hoosiers is a great movie. Yes, he’s proud of his roots. But he is a life-long Purdue fan, so why does he have to be associated with his rival’s mascot?). Kyle moved to Nashville in 2013 to study Biomedical Engineering at Vanderbilt (Go Dores!). After earning his bachelor’s degree, he attended the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and spent four more years in the Honky Tonk capital of the world (but let’s be honest, he stayed so that he could keep attending Vanderbilt sporting events). After all of that time in Nashville, Kyle and his wife, Shelby, decided that it had become their second home and they just couldn’t bear the thought of leaving behind their friends, church family, and mentors - so they went for the hat trick, joining the Triple Dore family!

His hobbies include playing golf (although not particularly well most of the time), playing / watching / talking about sports (as if that wasn’t already clear), playing board / card games (even though Shelby always seems to win), and playing guitar or piano.

Cat grew up in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin (Wis-KAHN-sin), a small town one hour north of Milwaukee. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison for undergrad where she majored in Nutritional Sciences and Global Health. Following undergrad, Cat worked as an Emergency Department Coordinator at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics before moving to Chicago to work as a clinical research coordinator at Rush in the Department of Orthopedics. She was able to return back to Madison for medical school, spending four more years going to the Madison farmer’s market, cheering on the Badgers at Camp Randall, and exploring the amazing restaurant scene in Madison. Cat then moved to Nashville to complete her Pediatrics residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Cat enjoys spending time with her husband and high school sweetheart, Brendan, being outside biking, golfing, or grabbing a drink on a patio, and is always looking for friends to watch Packer games with her.

Dr. McMahon's research focuses on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the design and implementation of multi-level interventions aimed at reducing lifetime disease risk and population-level health disparities associated with trauma and environmental stress in childhood. She implements community-engaged strategies throughout the research process, including the early involvement of Community Advisory Boards, to maximize cultural appropriateness and fit, effectiveness, sustainability, and scalability of health behavior interventions in children at disproportionate risk of ACEs-related disease.
