Our fellows are encouraged to identify an area of nephrology that sparks their interest. In addition to meeting the American Board of Pediatrics requirement for Scholarly Activity, fellows will develop unique expertise that prepares them for careers in academic medicine, whether as clinician-educators or physician-scientists. Prior research experience is not required.
What To Expect:
- Multiple options to conduct research in areas including pediatric nephrology, hypertension, acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, glomerular disorders, renal pathology, immunology, and transplant medicine. Fellows may choose to pursue basic, clinical, or translational research; quality improvement; biomedical informatics; or health policy.
- Help identifying a mentor, whether within the Division or across the medical center.
- Help developing a project or joining an existing one, either within Pediatric Nephrology, other subspecialty divisions with Pediatrics, Adult Nephrology, or Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology.
- Protected time for research. Fellows start exploring research opportunities in their 1st year of training and then dedicate the majority of the 2nd and 3rd year to scholarly activity.
- Scholarship Oversight Committee (SOC) providing regular meetings and support
- Funding to attend and present at national conferences
- Opportunities for grant awards including T32 and institutional training grants
- Formal research training such as the Master of Science in Clinical Investigation or MPH degree programs
- Numerous resources through the Vanderbilt Institute for Clinical and Translational Research including:
- Studios for expert guidance in study design, grants, and manuscript writing.
- Grant Pacing Workshops to help complete a grant application.
- Edge Reviews: Internal mock study sections composed of senior faculty who review grant applications and give guidance to improve proposals.
- Biostatistical Clinics to meet with biostatisticians to discuss individual projects.
- Research Training, including responsible conduct of research, time management, and presentation skills.
