Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship Curriculum and How to Apply

The Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship is an ACGME-accredited three-year program for Board eligible/certified physicians in Pediatrics or Medicine-Pediatrics. The program is accredited for 12 PICU fellows and matches three to four trainees per year.

The educational curriculum includes core concepts in Pediatric Critical Care medicine, neurocritical series, board review series, journal club, divisional research conference, quality improvement series, ethics series, communication curriculum, with future development of a point-of-care ultrasound series. Simulation educational opportunities are offered frequently in both units, as well as dedicated didactic, procedural, and simulation education throughout training.

Fellows may also pursue additional learning opportunities through electives in transport medicine, sedation, ethics, palliative care, and others.

  • The 42-bed Pediatric Critical Care Unit and the 23-bed Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit admits about 3,000 patients each year. We care for patients from all medical and surgical services at Vanderbilt. In addition, Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt is a major referral center for various pediatric subspecialties including:

    • Pediatric trauma
    • Organ transplantation (heart, kidney, liver, and bone marrow)
    • Cardiothoracic surgery 
    • Burns
    • Neurosurgery
    • Plastic Surgery
    • Head and Neck Surgery
    • Urologic surgery

How to Apply

We participate in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and only accept applications in this manner.

Initial application submissions are received from July 15 through October 1. Applicants are then invited by the Fellowship Program Director to interview from August to November after holistic review of the application materials by the Fellowship Recruitment Committee. As a result, we encourage you to apply early.

The Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Training Fellowship Training Program at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine accepts applicants with J1 visa status.

Additional application information is available on the Office of Graduate Medical Education's website. The following are minimum requirements for application to the training program and should be included in the ERAS application:

  1. Board Eligible or Board Certified in Pediatrics or Medicine-Pediatrics
  2. Updated CV
  3. Personal Statement
  4. Three letters of recommendation
  5. School of Medicine transcript
  6. USMLE/COMPLEX transcript of Step 1-3 scores
  7. ECFMG certification if pertinent
  8. Personal interview (by invitation)
