Health Equity and Inclusive Excellence Advisory Committee

The Department of Pediatrics Health Equity and Inclusive Excellence Advisory Committee was established in 2020 to serve in an advisory capacity to the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics. The committee's charge was to identify and recommend specific actionable opportunities and potential resource needs required for sustainable change and measurable impact in both diversity and inclusion for faculty and trainees and health equity for the patients and communities that we serve. The committee was co-founded by Shari Barkin, MD, MSHS and Kecia N. Carroll, MD, MPH.

Today, the committee also serves in an advisory capacity to the Department of Pediatrics as a whole and is composed of one or more representatives from each division. House staff are also represented. The committee convenes monthly and engages in initiatives to achieve annual goals in diversity, equity, and inclusion. This work includes participating in specific workgroups focused on faculty and trainee education on DEI-related topics and gender-specific issues, as well as hosting guest speakers from the community and across VUMC to further enhance education and our connection to the community.
