Dr. Ho's research is centered in cancer pharmacology with background knowledge in molecular pharmacology, clinical pharmacology and molecular biology. His main areas of research include 1) mechanisms by which drug transporters contribute to overall chemotherapy disposition in pediatric oncology and 2) pharmacogenomics in cancer therapy. He earned a medical degree in 1997 and a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation in 2004, both from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He completed a pediatrics residency in the Department of Pediatrics in 2000, a clinical fellowship in the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, and a research fellowship in the Division of Clinical Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2003. He received a Vanderbilt University School of Medicine Clinician Scientist Award in 2003, a K08 Clinical Scientist Career Development Award from NIH (NIGMS) in 2007, and a R01 Independent Investigator Award from NIH (NIGMS) in 2012, and has served as co-investigator on several NIH-funded grants focused on drug transporters, drug disposition, pharmacogenetics, and clinical pharmacology. Dr. Ho was elected to the Society for Pediatric Research in 2010 and awarded a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) from NIH and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy in 2013. This award, established in 1996, is the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers and reflect the administration's priority "on producing outstanding scientists and engineers to advance the nation's goals, tackle grand challenges, and contribute to the American economy." He joined the faculty at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt in 2003 and is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology.

Dr. Hiremath is a board-certified Pediatrician and Pediatric Gastroenterologist. He has a broad background in epidemiology, biostatistics, research methods, designing and executing clinical trials, and biomedical imaging. He has advanced training in Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorders through the NIH funded Consortium of Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disease Researchers.

Dr. Hiremath leads the multidisciplinary Pediatric Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorders Program at Vanderbilt. This clinic focuses on providing exceptional clinical care to eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease patients and serves as a referral center for patients living in the Southern region. Through his interactions with eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease patients and their caregivers, he is able to identify unmet needs that are most relevant to them, and this informs his translational research.

With his ongoing involvement in the NIH-supported Consortium of Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disease Researchers, Dr. Hiremath collaborates with experts within and outside of the United States. At Vanderbilt, he has developed an interdisciplinary approach to address some of the outstanding questions in the field (see Figure). He works collaboratively with adult Gastroenterologist’s, and experts in basic science, infectious diseases, pathology, nutrition, biomedical engineering, speech language pathology, bioinformatics, and computer science. He also works closely with the patient advocacy groups, patient registries, and pharmaceutical industry.

Dr. Hiremath has been taking of eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease patients and has been conducting eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases research for more than a decade. His commitment to the field has been recognized by his peers through his nomination to the Society for Pediatric Research and has received several awards and accolades. His research has been supported by NIH (T32, K12, K23, R21), the Consortium of Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disease Researchers, American College of Gastroenterology, and institutional grants.

Since 1990, Dr. Hickson's research has focused on why families choose to file suit, why certain physicians attract a disproportionate share of malpractice claims, and studies linking disrespectful/ unprofessional behavior and surgical and medical adverse outcomes. His work also has focused on how to identify and intervene with high-risk physicians. Dr. Hickson's work has resulted in over 170 peer review articles and chapters; educational initiatives to promote disclosure of medical errors and address behaviors that undermine a culture of safety; and the development of PARS® (Patient Advocacy Reporting System) and CORSsm (Coworker Observation Reporting System), programs that use unsolicited patient and coworker complaint data as the basis for tiered interventions on high-risk clinicians. The PARS® and CORSsm programs have been implemented in more than 180 hospitals and health systems in the US.
