Pediatric Nephrology Educational Conferences

There is a robust schedule of educational conferences between the division, other pediatric subspecialty divisions, the Department of Pediatrics, and the Division of Nephrology with the Department of Medicine. A list of these conferences, their scheduled times, and frequencies is below.

Pediatric Nephrology Conferences

Pediatric Nephrology Clinical Conference (Weekly, Thursdays at 4:30pm): Discussion of current patient care issues from both the inpatient service and outpatient clinic schedule, including clinical conundrums. Additionally, there will be short didactic teaching pertinent to these clinical cases for the learners (residents, fellows) rotating on those services.

Pediatric Rheumatology Clinical Conference (Weekly, Thursdays at 11:00am): Discussion of current patient care issues among the Pediatric Rheumatology fellows and faculty, often with overlapping renal sequelae.

Pediatric Urology Grand Rounds (Quarterly, Mondays at 5:00pm): Case presentations by the senior urology resident (PGY-4) on service discussing difficulty cases, occasionally requiring input from the managing pediatric nephrologist.

Division of Nephrology Conferences

Renal Pathology Conference (Monthly, Tuesdays at noon): Discussion of interesting renal pathology findings from both the pediatric and adult hospitals, led by Dr. Agnes Fogo.

Nephrology Journal Club (Monthly, Tuesdays at noon): Review of recent journal publications, typically selected by the senior Nephrology fellows, with focused discussion on clinical application.

Renal Physiology Conference (Weekly, Wednesdays at noon): On-going didactic curriculum covering topics of normal and pathologic renal physiology given by the adult and pediatric nephrology faculty.

Nephrology Grand Rounds (Weekly, Thursdays at noon): Leading faculty from Vanderbilt and other institutions are invited to discuss the most up-to-date information on various topics within nephrology, from both the clinical, translational, and basic science perspective.

Nephrology Clinical Conference (Weekly, Fridays at noon): Vanderbilt adult and pediatric nephrology discuss clinical updates on various disorders.

Departmental Conferences

Department of Pediatrics Research Conference is held on Mondays at noon nine months per year. Original research and works-in-progress are formally presented by invited faculty from Vanderbilt and other institutions.

Pediatric Grand Rounds is held on Tuesday mornings at 7:45am nine months per year. Faculty from Vanderbilt and other institutions are invited to present on a topic of their choosing related to child health.

Pediatric Morbidity, Mortality, and Improvement (Monthly, Wednesdays at 6:30 or 7:30am): This hospital-wide conference provides a setting to discuss important cases from Children's Hospital and focus on ways in which we can improve systems that affect patient care.

Department of Pediatrics Education Faculty Development Conference Series (Weekly, June-August, Mondays at noon): This conference is held during the three months in which there is no research conference or Grand Rounds. Leaders in education within the department will present a variety of educational topics to help advance clinical and didactic teaching skills.

Department of Pediatrics Core Curriculum for Fellows Conference (Weekly, June-August, Tuesdays at 5:00pm): This conference for all departmental first-year fellows covers topics such as professionalism, clinical epidemiology, evidence-based medicine, biostatistics, research methodology, study design, ethical principles, manuscript preparation, and effective leadership. The lecture series for second-year fellows consists of three lectures held in the spring addressing topics of adult learning theory and leadership skills, and the lecture series for third-year fellows consists of three lectures held in the fall addressing team management, medical economics, and career planning.
