Research Information
Dr. Chappell's scientific interests encompass the biology, pathogenesis, etiology, and prevention of viral diseases, emphasizing infections of the respiratory and enteric systems. He has investigated structural and functional principles governing virus cell-targeting and replication programs using model systems of virus-cell interactions and more recently focused on replication mechanisms and countermeasures development against highly virulent emerging viruses, specifically, Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronaviruses. Other ongoing collaborative research includes the contemporary pathogen spectrum and genetic diversity, clinical features, and vaccine-mediated prevention of acute viral respiratory and gastrointestinal infections of children.
